Our Approach
Why Does Digital Health Matters?
Digital health represents the performance of medical practice within a digital environment — from AI-driven diagnostics to telemedicine and electronic health records. It depends on modern technologies and online collaboration but, above all, on people’s skills. To make these tools effective, healthcare professionals must possess the competencies, confidence, and ethical understanding to apply them responsibly. This is where education becomes decisive. Medical and nursing curricula must evolve from theory-based training to competence-based, technology-enabled learning that mirrors real-world healthcare practice.
Understanding the Challenge
Digital transformation in healthcare education is not just about technology — it is about people. Behind every innovation are students seeking guidance, educators adapting to new realities, nurses striving for modern skills, and patients hoping for better, more connected care. The following voices capture the challenges that Digi-CHange seeks to address — human stories that define our mission.
Voices from the Field:
Regional Needs and Policy Context
Georgia: Aligned with the National Health Care Strategy 2022–2030, which prioritizes digital-health system strengthening and telemedicine expansion. Digi-CHange helps bridge the competence gap that limits eHealth implementation.
Ukraine: Since 2018, Ukraine has digitized healthcare documentation and services. Amid the 2022 invasion, digital tools became essential for continuity of care. Digi-CHange contributes to recovery through digital training and resilience-building.
Ireland: Builds upon the All-Ireland Nursing and Midwifery Digital Health Competency Framework (NMBI, 2023), integrating digital health into nursing education and practice to prepare adaptable, future-ready professionals.
The Digi-CHange Model
Digi-CHange introduces an innovative, student-centred and interdisciplinary approach to digital-health education. Through its “knowledge chain” model, the project ensures that medical and nursing students, educators, and practitioners develop practical, interconnected digital skills. The approach integrates curriculum reform, simulation, and real-world collaboration between academia and industry — enabling a new generation of healthcare professionals ready for the digital era.
Our Objectives
Digi-CHange transforms the way healthcare professionals are trained by aligning education with the digital realities of modern medicine. Our six objectives define a clear roadmap — each measurable, realistic, and directly linked to tangible outcomes. Together, they ensure that the project not only introduces innovation but also delivers verifiable impact in education, practice, and policy.
1️⃣ Curricular Reform — The objective aims to reform traditional healthcare (medical and nursing) curricula by incorporating digital health concepts and technologies. The main principle is to integrate digital health elements across multiple learning courses as part of a “knowledge chain”.
2️⃣ Digi-CHange Labs — Digi-CHange Labs serve as practical training environments equipped with state-of-the-art digital health tools and technologies.
3️⃣ Network Collaboration — The Digi-CHange network facilitates collaboration among labs, enabling joint educational and assessment activities and bridging academia and industry. Industry is part of the network and contributes to the options of “industrial practical and scientific internships” and “entrepreneurship” realization. The network is applied for virtual mobility options and ensures realization of interdisciplinary webinars and team-based collaborations.
4️⃣ AI-Based Simulations — Opportunities for AI application in healthcare (medical and nursing) education are defined, piloting approaches such as AI-enhanced educational tools to improve learning outcomes. The concept of their integration in healthcare curriculum is developed.
5️⃣ Competency Assessment Tools — Knowledge and competencies specific to digital health and developed by digital health “knowledge chain” of healthcare curriculum are identified. The robust assessment framework that reflects the diverse dimensions of professionalism specific to digital health and ensures objective assessment is developed.
6️⃣ Awareness & Communication — The strategic communication on transformative potential of digital health and advantages of AI integration in healthcare (medical and nursing) curriculum is performed.
Together, these six objectives form the backbone of Digi-CHange — turning ideas into measurable impact and ensuring that healthcare education keeps pace with the digital future.
Bridging Policy and Practice
Digi-CHange goes beyond curriculum reform. It directly supports national and regional digital-health goals by training a digitally competent workforce and creating infrastructures that outlast the project. By aligning higher-education reform with public-health policy, Digi-CHange builds sustainability and ensures that project outcomes contribute to equitable, resilient healthcare systems in all partner countries.
Vision for the Future
Digi-CHange is not only an educational project — it is a bridge between policy, innovation, and society. By embedding digital literacy, AI, and interprofessional collaboration into healthcare training, it shapes a workforce capable of leading Europe’s health transformation. Its impact will endure through open collaboration, shared learning spaces, and evidence-based policy recommendations.
